What is social mobility?

Answer:

Social mobility is the ability to move up (or also down) the social scale. An obvious example would be the son or daughter of up unskilled worker who is successful at high school, goes to college, qualifies as a computer software engineer and make a success of his/her life and earns vastly more than his/her parents did.
