Perhaps August Comte did coin the phrase, I can't be sure of that. However there was a book written by C. Wright Mills called Sociological Imagination. It is the idea that people need to understand that their personal problems are reflections of the greater problems and issues in the society and they can relate their problems to these historical issues that are occurring in their society. Maybe that doesn't make sense. It's hard to word in a way that is easy to understand.
