Two meanings to sterile, that I know of.
1. Completely clean, sanitized, free of bacteria. Must be done by boiling, disinfecting etc.
2. Unable to reproduce due to some abnormality or deliberate modification of reproductive organs (when you talk about 'sterilising' a pet, that means spay/neuter to avoid unwanted babies.)
