A peptic ulcer is an ulcer of the stomach. Usually something injures the lining and so a hole develops. Sometimes, particularly in times of stress, it is the stomach;s own acid that causes the injury.

A stomach ulcer is usually caused by an infection with a bacterium (germ) called H. pylori. A 4-8 week course of acid-suppressing medication will allow the ulcer to heal. In addition, a one week course of two antibiotics plus an acid-suppressing drug will usually clear the H. pyloriinfection. This usually prevents the ulcer recurring again. Anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat conditions such as Arthritis sometimes cause stomach ulcers. If you need to continue with the anti-inflammatory drug, then you may need to take long term acid-suppressing medication.

A peptic ulcer is a hole in the lining of the stomach, duodenum, or esophagus. An ulcer is a sore or erosion that forms when the lining of the digestive system is corroded by acidic digestive juices. It is estimated that between 5% and 10% of adults globally are affected by peptic ulcers at least once in their lifetimes.

Exactly what they sound like. Ulcers in the intestines:

A sore open wound where there should NOT be one. They look like a cut or cold sore inside the persons guts.

It allows leaking from one area to another. Not only does that leakage cause pain, but the hole itself is very painful and can bleed. Even though it is deep inside, you can still feel it, as if you swallowed a fireball.
