A card catalog is a library resource, although they are becoming increasingly obsolete. The catalog usually consist of upright cabinets filled with many long narrow drawers. The drawers are filled with small cards. The subject cards are sorted by subject, as the name implies. They have information on them such as the author, title, and a location number as well. These cards assist in helping the reader locate the book of their choice, or identify what books are available on a particular subject. The reason this system is becoming obsolete is advances in technology. Many libraries have computer systems in place that simplify this process.

A subject card catalogue is, essentially, a catalogue that is arranged alphabetically by subject. Each item within a collection is assigned one or more subject headings that act as access points in order to help users find items on specific subjects.

A subject card catalog lists items within a library in alphabetical order according to the subject heading(s) for each item. In order to make a subject card catalog, you need to:

  • Determine the subject(s) of each item in the collection.
  • From this, you designate subject heading(s) for each item.
  • Create a card for each item in the collection according to their main subject heading.
  • Arrange the cards in alphabetical order in a card catalogue cabinet.
