I have found research online that suggests the use of Vicryl or Vicryl plus dissolving stitches under the skin plus dermabond to close the outer layer can cause a hypersensitive reaction in some patients. Seems that when the stitch material begins to dissolve, the body does not recognize its chemical compounds and attempts to reject them. I have a 2-3" incision on my neck from a cervical disk removal surgery 2 months ago, and one corner of the site just started becoming inflamed last week. This week is an angry red all over, and my surgeon will probably order the stitches removed to alleviate the inflammation. If left untreated, serious infection could result.
