They were:

1. Simon (whom Jesus nicknamed 'Peter' the 'Rock'). Peter became the leader of the disciples. He was loyal to Jesus but showed a fallibility that shows he was simply human. He was often impetuous and spoke sometimes without thinking first. It is believed that Peter was crucified upside down in Rome during the times when Christians were persecuted.

2. Andrew, brother of Simon/Peter

Both of these were fishermen.

3. James and his brother 4. John, the sons of Zebedee

These were teenage boys and Zebedee their father was also a fisherman, so it is assumed that they would have followed on in his profession. John was the disciple closest to Jesus ('the one whom Jesus loved') and was most likely the author of the fourth gospel. John grew up to be a visionary figure and recognised the divine nature of Jesus in his writings. It is believed that he also wrote the three letters in the New Testament attributed to him, as well as the Revelation of John (the last book of The Bible) while in exile on the Greek island of Patmos.

5. Matthew, (also called 'Levi') was a tax collector and most likely the author of the first gospel.

Little is known of the rest of the disciples. The rest of the disciples were:

6. James, the son of Alpheus

7. Philip,

8. Bartholomew (also called 'Nathaniel')

9. Thomas (also called 'didymus' - 'the twin') . Thomas goes down in history as 'doubting Thomas' as he did not believe in Jesus's resurrection unless he could see Jesus for himself. Jesus then appeared to Thomas at which he fell at his feet exclaiming 'My Lord and my God!'

10. Thaddeus, also called 'Judas' or 'Jude'. People often confused Judas with Judas Iscariot, and so he became the disciple whom many would regard as a lost cause. As a result Judas became the patron saint of lost causes.

11. Simon the Zealot, who was a freedom fighter before meeting Jesus

12. Judas Iscariot. (who betrayed Jesus). Judas was also the 'keeper of the purse' of the disciples. He betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver (about a month's salary) and, after seeing what he had done, went out and hanged himself. After his suicide, a man called Matthias took his place.
