per Chilton's, the firing order of the 78 toro, 403cu in. is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The same as the 455cu
Firing order should be cast into intake in front of carb if you have factory cast iron intake but above answer is right
also it has a counter clockwise rotation unlike the corporate engine firing order
