A century is a time span of a 100 years.
Since the dating of the calender after the death of christ, we have been using the word centuty to denote each 100-year period. So from day 1 of 1 A.D. was called the first (1 st) century. Counting so, the 19th century means the years commencing 1801 A.D. through 1900
