I am a tax preparer in Pontotoc, MS. Business have until JANUARY 31st to actually put their W2s in the mailbox to send out. Ashley Furniture W2s will be mailed out from Wisconsin, so they should be received by Feb 5th. That is just an estimated time, but IRS requires the forms be mailed out NO Later than JAN 31. Hope this helps

Is the 31st of January the deadline for employers to get your w2s out to employees?
Yes, it appears to be: http://www.hrotoday.com/News.asp?id=184 The rule states that it is the deadline that an employer must have the w2 A) available for an employee to print or view electronicly. B) postmarked in transit to last known address. I have had a couple former emplyees get very upset with me when they did not receive their w2's because they failed to keep the company updated with their current mailing address.

Employers are required to deliver or mail/(postmark) employee copies of W2s by February 2, 2009. You can request an extension. Employer's "red ink" Copy A, must be mailed to the Social Security Administration by March 2, 2009. If you file online at the SSA web site, you will have until March 31, 2009. There are penalties for filing late. If the employer doesn't provide a W2 to employees (perhaps they are no longer in business), an employee can file their own W2 with the SSA to make sure they get credit for Soc. Sec. Benefits when they retire.
