What is an Amishs lifestyle?

Amish people are known best for living a very simple life free of electricity. They ride in horse and buggy instead of in automobiles. The main occupation of the Amish is farming. The Amish use manual plows instead of tractors to tend the fields. They do not watch TV or use any electricity inside of the house. In some Amish communities, it is permissible to have electricity in the barn. The Amish dress very conservatively. The women wear long skirts or dresses with long blouses all year long. The men wear jeans or pants and a long shirt also. The Amish try not to indulge in material items. They are a very religious group. The Amish people live off of their own livestock and the money they make by selling their livestock. Currently, some Amish are stepping out of the traditional Amish mold and obtaining modern jobs.

They live their life exactly the same as ultra orthodox Jews, as that is what they are from their ancestry roots, but they believe in Jesus and no longer practice Jewish rituals.

This means they live a simple life, what is termed plain people, supposedly with far less modern technology.

A couple decades ago, most Amish lived on farms, but they have had to diversify under economic pressure, to more commercial enterprises.

They live by having large families, where most work is done by their children, most of their income comes from the labor of their children.

Most Amish are financially burdened, on the verge of poverty, suffering from minor to major health problems.

Most of the Amish live in southeast Pennsylvania, but there are areas in Canada and the Midwest that the Amish have settled in as well. The most famous region they live in is Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

They believe it is sin to go against tradition and the bishop. The bishop says the way it's going to be, and they follow. Like puppets on strings.

I've talked to many Amish people. I've lived around them all my life. They don't know why they do a lot of the things they do. If you were to ask an Amish man,

"Why do you have beards but no mustaches?" He'd say,

"I don't know, because that's just the way we've always done it."

Why? Like I said, even they don't know.

Addendum:Many Amish individuals simply live by the standards expected! However, the underlying idea kept by bishops is that allowed items (which is probably meant by "live like they do") should never separate the community. The focus should always be on God and the value of Gelassenheit that pairs with it. Cars, for example, would allow individuals to meld more with modernity and sever the ties of the community. Scooters or rollerblades, however, offer very limited travel and therefore minimal social separation. Views on electricity are similar: no allowances should tie the Amish to the larger world. In short, however, why the Amish live like they do is to keep from hindering their relationships with God and the community.

For most part, it is a nice and peaceful existence, most live on rural country farms.

The food is sometimes hard to choke down, to eatable by outside standards.

They socialize with their own gender, and this has lead to homosexuality.

They are educated to 8th grade, with shorten school days, taught just basic fundamentals of the 3Rs.

They worry about normal things like money, bills, and life in general.

They talk about religion in limited terms, as way passing day, and limits of their education.

They suffer from medical problems, with no health insurance, and believe god will heal them.

The hierarchy is the Elder rules over members, the men rule over wives and children.

Elders are dictators with absolute power, the whole congregation, has no say to get ride of a bad elders.

If your man your house is your castle, your wife your children are your servants, you only answering to the elders.

If you are a woman or child, you have no say, no one to go to for help, unless your willing leave all you know.

The Amish are not opposed to technology or modern conveniences. They just value their religious beliefs, home and community life more. Therefore, they do not use technology which interferes with these important things. They don't use electricity, because electric lights and appliances disturb the tranquility of family life. They use very sophisticated mechanical technology based on human or animal power because it makes life easier without disrupting the rhythm of daily life. They don't have a phone in the home for the same reason. However, they might have a public telephone in a central location for use in emergencies. Wouldn't you be happier without a smartphone constantly bugging you too? It's all a matter of values.

It involves hard work on the farms with no electricity what so ever. They usually also believe in church on every Sunday for at least 2-3 hours.
