We performed a series of experiments in order to determine the actual temperature of the lit cigarette. Here are the results for the temperature at different locations and under different conditions:
Temperature without drawing:
Side of the lit portion: 400 deg C (or 752 deg F)
Middle of the lit portion: 580 deg C (or 1112 deg F)
Temperature during drawing:
Middle of the lit portion: 700 deg C (or 1292 deg F)
The above numbers represent the average we obtained by performing several trials and can be considered accurate to within 50 deg C. A standard Fe-CuNi digital thermocouple thermometer was used in all trials.
For comparison, the hottest part of a candle flame is around 1,400 C and the average around 1,000 C.

Wattage is calculated by multiplying the voltage by the amperage, and since we know that the average cigarette lighter fuse is 15 amps (that is the limiter that keeps the current from going any higher than that) and that the average vehicle uses a 12volt system, 12 volts x 15 amps = 180 watts. That means that if you try to use more than 180 watts (even as a peak or pulse wattage) then that 15 amp fuse will blow. However, while the car/truck battery is rated at 12 volts, that fully charged battery is actually putting out 13.8 volts, and 14.4 volts while the vehicle is running (the alternator puts out a high voltage than the battery rating, so that it can pump current into your battery and keep it charged). That means that a 170 watt 12volt appliance plugged into your cigarette lighter outlet may still blow your fuse, because the same appliance at 14.4 volts would try to draw 204 watts.
