One suggestion:

It's probably best to drive your stakes when you plant your tomato plants to prevent root damage once they've began growing good. Drive the stake into the ground 3 to 6 inches away from the tomato plant. Be sure to drive them far enough into the ground that they are stable and not wobbly. When blooms begin to appear on your tomato plants, loosely tie them to the stake, starting at the bottom of the main stalk. It doesn't matter what type of twine or tie you use, but a good suggestion is to use pieces of old pantyhose. They are soft, and they stretch without cutting into the plants. As your plant grows, add another tie, tying the plant higher up onto the stake.

Another suggestion:

Depending on the type of tomato plants you are planting and how large they will grow as to what type of staking you will want to use. For instance I have tomato plants that are 8 feet tall. I have used bamboo. You can wither stake them as stated above or you can make a type of trellis for the plants to grow against. You can also use wire Fencing that is 5 to 6 feet high and put around the perimeter of plants. The wire holes need to be large enough to pick your ripe tomatoes. Hope that helps. ( Most of the time individuals that grow bamboo are always happy to let someone cut and harvest due to its quickness in growing very tall in one season, about 15ft or more).

In my garden I have 3 rows with 5 tomato plants in each. I have 2 stakes at either end of the 5 plants with string twine from stake to stake on each side. The stakes are 36 high and about 12 inches in the ground. Good luck. It is best to do this before the tomato grows very much. Pushing the stake into the ground near the plant can damage the roots. Also, you can put 1 (or more if needed ) stake per plant ,& tie the plant to the stake with twine as it grows, wrapping it in a figure-of-8 to prevent it cutting in.

The best way to stake tomatoes, this method involves tying the tomato plant to a stake or stick stuck in the ground. Tomato stakes are normally made of wood, bamboo or plastic and you can now find spiral "self supporting" tomato stakes at hardware stores and nurseries. This method is the easiest of the three methods to start, but, requires the most effort to maintain. Plants grown on tomato stakes must be checked daily during active growth and tied to the stake as they grow. The gardener must also make sure that the tomatoes are tied securely enough so that the weight of the fruit won't pull it down, but not so tightly that the plant would be damaged. You must also make sure the stake is tall enough to accommodate the full grown size of the plant.Â

This method is the best way to stake tomatoes in all size gardens and does particularly well for container grown tomatoes where space is limited. Tomato plants do best with this method if the tomatoes are pruned to grow on a single stem.

Seeds are planted in starting blocks, that are placed under grow lights indoors. 1 - 3 seeds are placed in a block and the strongest sprout is allowed to grow. When the weather is warm enough the blocks are planted in the garden.

If you are refering to a tomato stake, you simply tie the plant to the stake with any type of twine - just not too tightly. If it is a very tall plant, tie it at several levels, and continue to tie it as it grows.

How do you keep top of tomato plants from sagging?

Most tomato plants need to be surrounded by support stakes or manufactured support "baskets" available at Home Depot, WalMart, etc.... If you can't find these, use my grandfather's method: Insert 1" x 1" stakes in the ground around the plant about 3' high, then tie strings around these stakes about every 6". Gently rest the limbs of the tomato plant onto the strings for support.

What is the Life cycle of tomato plant?

A tomato plant is an annual plant and it grows, produces tomatoes and dies for one season. There are plants such as perennials that seem to "die" but regrow and bloom again in the spring or summer but a tomato plant is not one of these. So, once you plant your tomato seeds and reap the benefits of their tomatoes they will eventually stop blooming andyielding tomatoes and the plant will die and not come back next season.
