Easter or Resurrection Sunday is the day Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus the Christ from the dead. • Palm Sunday - The day Jesus entered Jerusalem triumphantly
• Ash Wednesday - Rooted in the ancient tradition of covering one's head with ashes, wearing sackcloth and fasting.
• Lent - The 40 days before Easter beginning on Ash Wednesday, it is a time for prayer, fasting and penitence, though not many fast the entire 40 days like Jesus did.
• Maudy Thursday - The day of the Last Supper and the night of Jesus' betrayal by Judas
• Good Friday - Jesus' death on the cross
• Easter Sunday - Jesus' resurrection from the dead
• Ascension Day - Celebrated 40 days after Easter, it marks Jesus' ascension into Heaven
• Pentecost - The seventh Sunday after Easter, it is the day the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus' followers in the Upper Room as they were celebrating the Jewish harvest festival called Shavuot

Origins of Easter

The name Easter originates from the Saxon Goddess Eostre or Ostara. Many scholars link this to Astarte or Ishtar from Babylon in the Bronze Ages (3300-1200 B.C.). They were Goddesses of fertility, love, war and sex and symbolised dawn. Za ustra means early morning in old church Slavonic and could also be a reference to this ancient origin. For many of the faithful, god-fearing Christians around the world, the resurrection of the Christ is central to that faith they hold so dear. Every year around March-April dramas are re-enacted commemorating the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus put on by devotees as a form of renewal. Like everything else that goes with religious matters, most Xians are blissfully ignorant about the true origins of this, the central theme of their faith. Coloured eggs are given to friends and the bunny is the animal associated with Easter but little thought is spared for the study of the roots of these traditions and the relationship Xianity shares with the "pagan" world it forever disrespects.

The truth of Easter's origins is not helped by the decontextualised way many Eurocentric researchers analyse history. The name Easter derives from the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring Eostre or Ostara. Easter is an ancient spring solstice festival - the same spring solstice festival that gave us Carnival and Phagwa - involving the death and resurrection of the husband of the Great Earth Mother Goddess. This resurrection, far from being a miraculous historical event that occurred two thousand odd years ago, is a symbolic spiritual renewal that has its origins in the dim mists of the earliest human societies in Africa.

The Easter Lily is also a very pagan symbol. It originates from Lillith, the Sumerian creation Goddess (predating Christianity by 5000-6000 years). Lilu symbolises her magical genitals, from which creation happens. In other words "Easter is a stolen Pagan holiday.
