Clarinets are most often made from African blackwood. This is a heavy black wood that comes from the Mpingo tree. The same is used for most oboes and wooden piccolos. Second most common would be plastic or resin. Clarinets were also made of metal at one time and are still seen occasionally. Some clarinets are now made of a mixture of resin and wood. Other woods such as cocobolo and rosewood are sometimes used. Boxwood was the material of choice for the earliest clarinets.

It depends.

Body: African Blackwood, Plastic

Keys: Nickel, Silver

Mouthpiece: Plastic, Rubber, rarely: wood, bone, ivory, glass, or "crystal"

Reed: Arundo Donax, (not by professionals) plastic

Ligature: Metal, cloth, leather.

Student clarinets, those used in middle and sometimes high school, are usually made out of a kind of plastic. Professional or advanced student clarinets are usually made out of African Blackwood. The Clarinet's keys are either made out of nickel or silver. Some professionals claim silver makes a difference in their sound, others think it makes no difference. The reeds are made out of a tall, perrenial cane known as arundo donax, although student reed are made of plastic to last longer (but this produces a bad sound quality, so professionals do not use them.) The ligature, the device which connects the reed to the mouthpiece, is made out of metal, leather, or cloth. The mouthpiece can be made out or hard rubber or plastic. Sometimes they can be made out of wood, bone, ivory, glass, or "crystal," these variants being used by professionals who believe that the material greatly alters the sound produced. There are just as many equally credible individuals who believe the material does NOT matter. Almost all clarinet players use plastic or rubber mouthpieces.

The clarinet can be made out of many things. Beginners usually use ABC plastic, and intermediate- advanced use guerilla wood. Plastic clarinets have less of a rich tone, but can be played outdoors. I suggest you have a plastic clarinet for marching band, or outdoor playing. Wood clarinets have a richer tone, but tone varies from the weather. I suggest using wood for indoor playing.

The keys can be made of different keys. They can be made of nickel or sliver. Nickel, you don't have to clean, but sliver you have to polish it once a month. SLiver makes your fingering more flexible, while nickel makes it slower.

What is a clairnet made out of?

Modern wood clarinets are typically made of Grenadilla. Very old clarinets were made of Boxwood. I've heard of Rosewood clarinets but have never seen one. One clarinet made by Conn around 1949~52 was marketed as "Violin Finish" and was actually made of plywood. There are also clarinets made of hard rubber (mostly older), ABS plastic and other flavors of plastic. Must not overlook metal clarinets, which were mostly made of nickel, nickel plated brass and some were silver plated or with some portion (like the bell) made of sterling silver. One very rare model made by Wm. S. Haynes was made entirely of sterling silver.
