International Falls, MN
Minneapolis/Saint Paul MN are the coldest big cities in the USA
Gunnison CO?
Not true. There are several cities in Minnesota, and a couple in Michigan that have Gunnison beat. I am guessing it's a Gunnison resident who left this answer.
Years ago, Gunnison tried to claim this title, but cannot as they are not cold enough. Since then, most residents have figured out that this is not necessarily something a town would most want to be known for!
Another fact, Fraser, Colorado is colder than Gunnison, so Gunnison is not even the coldest city in Colorado.
Gunnison Colorado is the coldest city in the U.S. records show that the lowest average temp for this time of year is -2.3 degrees F held by Fargo North Dakota. Gunnison Colorado's average is -6 degrees. As for Fraser Colorado, this time of year, they're averaging 40 degrees during the day and around 20 degrees at night. GUNNISON COLORADO IS THE COLDEST CITY IN THE U.S
According to the Western Regional Climate Center (WRRC) http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?cogunn Gunnison has an average mean temperature of 37.6 degrees F throughout the year while International Falls has an average mean temperature of 36.4 degrees F(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Falls,_Minnesota#Climate) also Fraser, Colorado has an average mean temperature of 32.5 or 34.8 degrees F(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraser,_Colorado). On the other hand International Falls, Minnesota has the coldest winters with the lowest avg high temps between the three cities, it just also has warmer summers than the other two cities two.
I would have said, without hesitation, North Dakota, in the 48 contiguous states. But, the information was from years ago, so I am posting a link with some information. You did not specify, 48 states, or just for winter, or for all year. This link will provide you with factual temperatures for ALL of the states, JUST the 48, WINTER, ALL YEAR, and the longest streak of cold days.
The coldest official temperature ever recorded in the United States occurred at a mining camp in Montana on January 20, 1954, when the temperature dropped to -70 F.
Based on record keeping over many years, the city of International Falls, Minnesota generally earns this dubious honor.
