Sulfuric Acid doesn't actually react with sugar. It dehyrates the sugar molecules; i.e. it removes the Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms which then bond to form Water H2O molecules (in the form of steam, since a lot of heat is released too). Carbon is left behind. For Sucrose sugar, the equation is C12H22O11 ---> 11H2O + 12C

Well, you need another reactant for sulfuric acid to react with. Sulfuric acid by itself will just sit there. Now, add a metal, like magnesium, and that will give you a reaction. Acids react with most metals to produce a salt and hydrogen gas. Magnesium and sulfuric acid react according to this equation:

H2SO4 + Mg --> MgSO4 + H2

As you can see, the products are magnesium sulfate (commonly known as Epsom salt) and hydrogen gas.
