Although this question is very general, it can be presumed that the question is referring to the most publicly-viewed symbol of Freemasonry: the Square and Compasses.
These two symbols have deep symbolic meaning for Freemasons, but the beginning of understanding them is to compare them with tools used by operative masons.
The Square is so named because it is operatively used to test objects for being "square", that is, a perfect 90-degrees in angle. A Square can also be used to create other angles by employing trigonometric measures to mark out a desired angle. To a Freemason, one of the primary meanings of the Square represents virtue. A common colloquialism with Masonic origin in American English is "square deal" which means an equitable exchange of monies, services or goods, meaning that both parties have acted with virtue.
The Compasses (note, this is a plural word - a "compass" is an instrument used to determine magnetic north) are operatively used to scribe circles. These are necessary to create perfectly round objects. To a Freemason, one of the primary meanings of the Compasses is to keep one's passions within limitations, so as not to be controlled by them.
Frequently one might see the letter "G" enclosed within the Square and Compasses. One of the primary Freemasonic meanings of this letter is that it represents "Geometry" or "God".

∙ 12y agoThere is no such thing as a "sacred" symbol of Freemasonry, because Freemasonry is not a religion.
The logo most often associated with the Masons is the "Square and Compasses," which is a builder's square with the right angle downward overlaid with compasses (the tool you use to inscribe a circle) with the points downward. Usually, the letter "G" is in the middle.
There are several other symbols used, most of which are representations of stonemasons' tools or geometry/math concepts. One symbol, the "All Seeing Eye" is ancient Egyptian in origin.

∙ 9y agoThe universally acknowledged symbol of Freemasonry is the square and compasses, which you can find on just about anything which is legitimately connected with the Masons. (Try searching for the Grand Lodge of anywhere you like).
The square is like a carpenter's square, set with the point pointing downwards. The compasses are above the square and are opened at about sixty degrees usually with the two points pointing downwards. In the space in the middle, the letter "G" is frequently added.

18kt g.e means gold electroplate...not worth a whole lot. the symbol is of interest. look at it more closely. are you sure it is an A inside a circle and not a masonic freemason symbol? the freemason symbol, if small can look like an A and the circle is actually a blue lodge order symbol sometimes used in conjunction with the base freemason symbol. some of the older masonic rings were made of cheaper materials. is there any ornamentation on the top or sides of the ring?

By you question, I am assuming you yourself are not a Freemason because if you were you would already know the answer. The only way to know, is if the person in question tells you they are, and at then you have to take him on his word. There is no reliable way for a non-Freemason to recognize a real Freemason. There are some tells that you could pick up on such as rings, lapel pins. (Just Google "Masonic ring" or "Masonic Lapel Pin" to see what they look like.) But again this is not 100% reliable because anyone can buy one of thes items. Freemasons are generally kinder and more helpful to their fellow man but this is very subjective and anyone can be kind.
