He is a man who loved the gold in special. For serious,, he had no idea what he was doing. He knew all the medical authorities by heart but didn't know The Bible. He ripped people off during the black plague and made lots of money but he didn't spend. He prescribed goldfor cures and loved gold very much.

He is well-read in the standard medical doctrines, from the Greeks right through to Chaucer's contemporary Gilbertus Anglicus, and also knows Astrology. The story tells, however, The Doctor, has not studied the Bible, and he has a financial deal worked out with his friend the apothecary to whom he sends his sick patients for medicine. The narrator jokes that his favorite medicine is gold.
