What is the History of Chrysler Outboard motors?

Answer:

Chrysler Corp purchased West Bend's outboard manufacturing in January,1965. Chrysler sold the marine division not because they desired to, but because it was demanded as part of the government's loan guarantees. Chrysler stern drives were sold to Bayliner Boats in 1983 and the outboard division was sold to the Force Outboards division of U.S. Marine - an affiliate of Bayliner - in 1984.

And I still find it strange that they were forced to do this

The Chrysler Marine and Chrysler Defense divisions of the Chrysler Corporation were the two most profitable parts of that company, and the government made them divest both businesses. If it was me, I would have made Chrysler sell the division making the cruddy cars to Volkswagen or someone else that made cars people liked, and just turned Chrysler into a defense contractor.
