What is the Human Portal System?

A human portal system is a vascular system in which blood flows from a capillary bed to another capillary bed without passing through the heart in between. This is rare and there are only two examples I can think of. This happens in the liver (hepatic portal system) and in the hypothalamus and the pituitary (H-P portal system).
