Karate or other martial arts like Sumo, Jujitsu, Kenjutsu are the original Japanese fighting styles if you like. Japanese people are also very well known for their swordsmanship. As you probably know from all those Ninja movies their swords are beautifully crafted, very strong, and sharp like a scalpel. Most Japanese people have been taught how to use these weapons since childhood as well, if not weapons than some other self defense strategy.
'Khaki' as you romanized it can't be Japanese if the first place. Self-defense would be 自衛 /ji ei/ and also 防衛 /bou ei/.
