The words to the song Danny Boy were written by an Englishman, lawyer Frederic Edward Weatherly in 1910; he set the lyrics to an old Irish tune then called the Londonderry Airin 1912.
The tune is very old, but the version we hear most often today is the arrangement by Australian-born pianist and composer Percy Grainger, frequently together with Weatherly's words.

∙ 11y agoA good question. It is a somewhat muted ( toned down) anti-war song of Irish Origin. the Pipes in question are Bagpipes used by martial bands. It is usually sung by a man, seems to hint at serious separation angst. This is handled in a totally different angle of presentation than say- Concerto For Lovers, written during the l960"s Berlin Crisis. I never liked the song ( Danny Boy).
