Stars are usually used in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called "Mormons") to represent the Telestial Kingdom, the lowest of the three degrees of Heaven. In this situation, the sun represents the highest degree, the Celestial Kingdom, and the moon represents the second degree, the Terrestrial Kingdom.

Those who go to the Telestial Kingdom are those "who received not the gospel of Christ, nor the testimony of Jesus" when it was offered to them. It will also be home to "liars, sorcerers, aldulterers, whoremongers, and whosoever loves and makes a lie" after they suffer in hell for their sins for 1000 years. Joseph Smith taught that although the Telestial Kingdom is the lowest degree of heaven, it's glory "surpasses all understanding." (See Doctrine and Covenants section 76)

In the early days of the Church, stars were more popularly used than in modern times. They are especially popular on the Salt Lake and Nauvoo Temples, the pioneer-era Tabernacles, and the Assembly Hall on Temple Square.

The 5 pointed star is actually an ancient Christian symbol that early Mormons used as well. It could represent several things, including the 5 senses, the 5 wounds of Christ, the 5 joys that Mary had of Jesus (the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the Assumption), and the five virtues (generosity, fellowship, purity, courtesy, and compassion). It also was sometimes used to represent Jesus Christ, who is called the "Morning Star" in Revelation 22:16. The star was almost entirely rejected as a Christian symbol in the late 19th and early 20th century, and lost popularity with the Mormons around that time as well.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) does not have an official symbol, aside from the logo-type of the church name. Members of the LDS Church still use unofficial symbols to express their faith, however.

Recent scholarship has shown that many early Latter Day Saints initially embraced and promoted the symbol of the cross, but that this use was later discouraged by church authorities in order to disassociate the Church from other forms of Christianity (particularly Catholicism). Most Mormons today now perceive the cross to be apostate and contrary to their faith.

Scholar Michael G. Reed has written extensively on this topic in his MA thesis, "The Development of the LDS Church's Attitude Toward the Cross" (CSU Sacramento, 2009). Reed's thesis is now being expanded, edited, and revised, in preparation for his forthcoming book "Banishing the Cross: The Emergence of a Mormon Taboo" (John Whitmer Books).

The most common symbols used by Latter-day Saints today are the gold Angel Moroni statue (found on top of most Mormon temples), the Christus (a statue of Jesus, by artist Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen), and the Salt Lake Temple. The Beehive was used historically but isn't common anymore.

Latter-Day Saints, aka Mormons, don't have a specific symbol such as the cross used by Protestants & Catholics, the Star of David used by Jews, or the Star and Crescent used to represent Islam. The closest thing to a universal symbol might be a portrait of Christ (since they are officially "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) since they intend to follow him - but even that really isn't a symbol of the religion since that is a symbol of what they are trying to emulate rather than the church itself.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) does not have an official symbol. The Christian cross was used occassionally until about 1910, but has rarely been used since. Often, an outline of the Angel Moroni is used, but it is not an official symbol adopted by the Church. Other symbols are also common, including a beehive, honeybee, or outline of the Salt Lake temple. The only official symbol is the Church's logo, which is simply it's name.

Individual organizations within the Church, such as the Young Women's and Women's Relief Society, do have their own official symbols, but these symbols do not have names.

You can find images of the symbols mentioned below at the "Related Links".

Mormons do not have a religious symbol in the way that Christians have crosses, Jews have a star of David, or Muslims have a star and crescent. Former President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Gordon B. Hinckley, when asked this question, said that the symbol of the church was the lives of it's members. (Mormons do believe that Jesus died on a cross to redeem mankind, but most view the cross as a gruesome symbol of death and choose to focus on the hope of His resurrection.)

When the need arises to represent the church visually, there are some common, although unofficial, images used. Often the Angel Moroni blowing a Trumpet (seen here on a Mormon Temple, here on a Mormon app, here on a US Boy Scouts medal, or here on a US Military gravestone) is used. Images of the Salt Lake Temple are also common (as seen here on jewelry, here on a bumper sticker, and here on a Mormon dating site logo). Occasionally the CTR (Choose The Right) shield is used, most often for children (such as on this baptism towel or this ring). The only official image used by the church is it's logo (seen here on a church sign) which includes only lettering.

Despite not having an official symbol, there is a lot of symbolism in Mormonism, especially in temple architecture. For example, a circle in a square represents the connection of heaven and earth, and the Seal of Melchizedek represents the priesthood. Additionally, design elements often include groups of three (representing God or the priesthood), eight (representing perfection and eternity), or twelve (representing the Twelve Tribes of Israel or the Twelve Apostles)
