The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), established on June 1, 1910, is the oldest organization in the United States dedicated to seeking compulsory integration for those of African descent -- into white males' established economic, political and residential communities. The NAACP's creation was inspired by Mary White Ovington (Caucasian), Oswald Garrison Villard (Caucasian), and William English Walling (Caucasian). Prior to the creation of the NAACP, the white and black races in America were following the stated goal of Booker T. Washington, which was to have blacks live separate from whites and thereby achieve self-reliance as a distinct people. Note: Whites and blacks in America were living legally separate under Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896). The NAACP was staunching opposed to having blacks be a self-reliant people. In the NAACP's formative years, no white philanthropist would be offering any financial help to the organization, believing it was far too radical - and wrong - in its renouncing self-reliance for those of African descent in America.

W.E.B. Dubois was the only black on the Executive Committee of the NAACP when it was formed. Mary White Ovington invited him to join after the organization was already established. He was given the title of Communication Director -- his only responsibility being to run the Crisis Magazine.

It stands for The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. On Feb. 12, 1909, Miss Ovington (she was a lifelong spinster), along with Oswald Garrison Villard and William English Walling (both White males and Christians) sent out a "Call" letter to everyone they believed would be supportive of an organization that would provide Blacks a new direction: integration. It was established (incorporated) on June 1, 1910. The organization's stated mission is "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination." However, the NAACP has rarely ever offered its voice or any kind of assistance to any other race or ethnic group other than those of African descent .

The NAACP was formed in February 12, 1909 and according to their own website, this was partly due to the practice of lynching and the race riot in Springfield that occurred in 1908. The original aim of the NAACP is summarised below:

securing for all people the rights guaranteed in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the United States Constitution, which promised an end to slavery, the equal protection of the law, and universal adult male suffrage, respectively
