Through the 2008 Games in Beijing, the women's Olympic record in shot put is 22.41 meters (73 feet, 6 1/4 inches) by Ilona Slupianek of East Germany at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. The Olympic record for men's shotput was set by Ulf Timmermann of East Germany at the 1988 Games in Seoul at a distance of 22.47 meters (73 feet, 8 5/8 inches).
