The most basic is to just simply say Happy Birthday! Some people like to add wordy wishes such as, I wish you the very best in your forth coming year, or Best Wishes to you on your special day, etc. There are quite a few ways to go and it would be lovely to have a site that lists the options according to who are you wishing a Happy Birthday to.

You should always address the card to the new mother, the new father and any existing siblings. If you don't know the individual names (ie. a work colleagues husband) get creative and come up with something all encompassing " To the Jones family (because you are not a couple anymore!)

I am somewhat of an authority on this topic .

Address the card:

To [the mother, the father and any existing siblings],

Congratulations of the birth of baby [name]. We look forward to meeting [him/her].

Wishing you all the best at this happy time.

your friends

[name or company name]

Don't address the card to the baby unless you are a close friend/ relative or you are trying to be funny. Also, consider the gift supplier- spell check the message! It is hard to know whether you really wanted to send "congradulations' with your baby gift or not!
