  • The American Heart Association recommends that adults who are healthy take in no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day.
  • My doctor also told me that an individual would get by fine with a minimum of 250 - 500 mg per day. The lower you can keep it the better!

A recommended maximum intake level of sodium per day is in the 1,500 mg. range. The actual need for sodium is only about 500 mg. per day. However, Americans consume a very high amount of sodium, somewhere in the range of 3,436 mg per day. High sodium increases the risk of high blood pressure among other medical issues.

The following is the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for calcium as published by National Academy of Sciences:

  • Infants
  • ** Age 0 to 6 months: 210 mg
    • Age 7 months to 1 year: 270 mg
  • Children
  • ** Age 1 to 3 years: 500 mg
    • Age 4 to 8 years: 800 mg
  • Women
  • ** Age 9 to 18 years: 1300 mg
    • Age 19 - 50 years: 1000 mg
    • Over Age 51 years: 1200 mg
    • *** Pregnancy
      • **** Under Age 19: 1300 mg
        • Age 19 and Over: 1000 mg
      • Lactating
      • **** Under Age 19: 1300 mg
        • Age 19 and Over: 1000 mg
  • Men
  • ** Age 9 to 18 years: 1300 mg
    • Age 19 - 50 years: 1000 mg
    • Over Age 51 years: 1200 mg

These recommendations were published in 2004 by the National Academy of Sciences

It may also be important to know that the body can not absorb more than 600mg of calcium at any time, so if taken as suppliments, it must be spaced out through the day. I would also add 200mg to the maleover 35 - 1.2g until 50 then 1.4g per day.

According to the last physician's studies no more than 1500mg per day, most people are using twice that amount, resulting in higher blood pressure

A normal healthy adult should consume no more than 2300mg of sodium per day which amounts to 1 tsp of table salt. 1500mg might be for a restricted sodium/AHA diet for heart/vascular problems; depending on health issues and your physician's instruction.

What would happen if kept going over your RDA for sodium?

Extremely high sodium levels, or hypernatremia, can lead to seziures and even death. Sodium is responsible for regulating the amount of fluid in your body, controlling blood pressure, bone growth, and for the proper trasmission of signals between nerves. So, too much sodium = dehydration & high blood pressure. The kidneys filter out sodium into the urine for excreatment, so if you're constantly going over your RDA of sodium - drink water. Lots of it. That's the only way your body can keep it's balance.
