There is no M-16 machine gun. There is the M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) which fires the same ammo as the M-16 and there is the M-60 Machine gun.
The M-60 can fire 550 rounds per minute.
The M-249 can fire up to 850 rounds per minute if the barrel is changed out every minute.
Actually according to http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m249.htm the m249 can fire up to 1,000 rounds per minute, the new Heckler & Koch XM-8 assault rifle (the future replacement of the M-16) can fire up to 750 rpm, and the M-16 (which does exist; to the person above me) according to http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m16.htm fires 800 rpm.
Varies by model. The standard M2 HBAR has a rate of fire from 400 - 600 rounds per minute. The aircraft AN/M2 has a rate of fire from 750 - 900 rounds per minute, and the AN/M3 has a rate of fire of 1200 rounds per minute. The M2 HBAR is standard for ground applications, while the AN/M2 and AN/M3 are intended for mounting in aircraft.
Yes, my friend owns a M16 and served in Iraq.
In a way the M16 is a machine gun, but it can also do three round burst and semi automatic. civilians are not allowed to have automatic m16s unless you have an automatic weapons permit, but you can have a semi automatic M16. (an AR-15 is almost like an M16 and much cheaper if you're looking to buy one.)
Machine guns come in a variety of sizes, from the 5.56x45mm cartridge used by the M16 and other NATO rifles, all the way up to the 14.5x115mm cartridge used by the KPV machine gun (anything 20mm and over is considered a cannon).
The US military's primary infantry weapon for training is the M16. Just remember that when you enter bootcamp that you dont call the M16 your "gun".. The M16 is your "weapon"
The M16 and the M4 are the US designations for the AR-15 pattern of rifles.
