Answer: Sturmabteilung, meaning "Storm Division" or Stormtroopers in the German Political Party, the NSDAP. They were a paramiitary or pseudo-military arm designed to act as party organizers and functionaries as well an armed escort and bodyguard. Most often known as "Brown Shirts", they were led by Ernst Rohm who fell out of favor with Hitler in 1934. The result was their elimination in the "Night of the Long Knives".
