I think its toaina !
There's no literal translation for grandpa in the Samoan language. Grandchildren would either simply say Papa or something similar. If you are after an "actual" translation (i.e, if you were explaining your relation with your grandpa to another person) you would say "O le tama o lo'u tama"...Bearing in mind that you are dragging the final "a" in the word tama. So it sounds like Ta-Maaah.
If a grandmother was talking: "Tama a la'u tama" (daughter/son of my daughter), "Afafine a la'u tama" (daughter of my son). If a grandad was talking: "Afafine a lo'u atali'i" (daughter of my son), "Atali'i a lo'u atali'i" (son of my son), "Afafine a lo'u afafine" (daughter of my daughter).
There is no particular word pertaining to each of the three. In translating the meaning/idea, if a grandfather was talking, grandchild would be "tama a lo'u afafine" (my daughter's child - tama in this case could be either a grandson or granddaughter); "atali'i/afafine a lo'u atali'i" (son/daughter of my son);("tama teine a lo'u afafine" (my daughter's daughter); "tama tama a lo'u afafine" (my daughter's son); "afafine a lo'u atali'i" (my son's daughter); "atali'i a lo'u atali'i" (my son's son).
If a grandmother is talking: grandchild would be "tama a la'u tama" (child of my child - meaning a son or daughter of her daughter); "atali'i o la'u tama" (son of my son); afafine o la'u tama" (daughter of my son).
I am sorry, it all sounds so confusing, but if you write it down and just focus on each one, I am quite sure you will be able to see the logic in it. After writing all of that, I am now confused myself - lol! Good luck.
Child is tamaitiiti. Children is tamaiti .
Tina a lo'u tina
It literally means "the mother of my mother".
Note: We don't have a literal translation for Grandma in Samoan, but we use tina, which is also Mother.
According to my Samoan Picture Dictionary I bought for my grandson whose mother is Samoan: Mother of the father is 'tina o le tama' Mother of the mother is 'tina o le tina'
Tina, the same name given to Mother; Tina o lo'u Tina (Mother of my Mother); Tina o lo'u Tama (Mother of my Father).
Tama (grandfather); Tina (grandmother). Translating the idea/meaning - matua o lo'u tina (parents of my mother); matua o lo'u tama (parents of my father).
