well can you keep it fore a year will it still work yes. or no A year is the arbitrary law a pharmacy must put on most medecines they dispense. for penecillin as long as its kept in a closed amber Rx bottle out of direct sunlight and away from extreme temps and moisture it can be good for years. if all the above parameters are met id say 3 years. it doesnt go bad or become harmful just less effective over time. tetracycline on the other hand should never be used past the exp. date

The prescription bottle will have an expiration date. Most medicine lasts well beyond the exp date. The exp date is there for a few reasons. It might actually expire. Medicine and the practice of medicine changes, so there is an expiration date so you don't keep the medicine for a few years. Also, your doctors don't want you to diagnose yourself. If you have the flu, the medicine will expire before you should get another flu. And... last but not least... it expires so you have to buy more.

I am not sure how long it lasts. In most areas it is law for the medicine to be in the RX container. If you found some and you don't know where or remember when it was from... don't chance it. Just play the game and go to the doctor. According to US Military studies conducted the shelf life is easily over ten years. Expiration dates on prescriptions are more for the benefit of the manufacturer than for consumer protection.

According to US military studies conducted the shelf life is easily over ten years. Expiration dates on prescriptions are more for the benefit of the manufacturer than for consumer protection, but regardless of that, when an antibiotic is prescribed for you, you should take the full prescription as the doctor prescribed it.

Penicillin usually expires after a year. For the most part, this medication does not necessarily go bad, but it does lose its effectiveness. With the problem of drug resistant bacteria, it isn't advisable to take an antibiotic which isn't able to kill the bacteria effectively.

Buffered Pfizerpen (penicillin G potassium) for Injection is highly water soluble. It may be dissolved in small amounts of Water for Injection, or Sterile Isotonic Sodium Chloride Solution for Parenteral Use. All solutions should be stored in a refrigerator. When refrigerated, penicillinsolutions may be stored for seven days without significant loss of potency.

Until the date of expiration, you get a full working drug. After this date, depending on the country, it may starts to lose effect. Generally it is 4 to 5 years after manufacturing the drug.

Can you take a penicillin just to be safe?

Taking just one penicillin doesn't really do anything, as it works over a few days worth of therapy. Taking any penicillin product is not recommended without doctor's direction because it can make you more susceptible in the long run to more bacterial infections that are penicillin resistant. Also, there shouldn't be any extra penicillin hanging around, because penicillin regimens should be continued until all the prescribed pills are taken, even after the infection is gone.
