In the original series a "chest insignia" patch indicated what ship and branch of service someone belonged to (eg. Command, Engineer, Science, etc...) In the "Next Generation", the patch was replaced by a "Combadge" or "Communications Badge". It no longer indicated the ship or branch of service, but became a general means of identifying and tracking Starfleet personnel and replaced the handheld communicators, as a means of communication aboard ship and during away missions.
