Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire find their home burnt to black and their parents dead. So they have to go to a stranger but a relative called Count Olaf. In their life, he tries to kill the orphans with no succes. Later on in the book, Count Olaf asks the orphans to be in his play called 'The Marvellous Marrige'. Violet says yes, and Klaus finds that the wedding in the play will be real! Count Olaf wants to marry Violet to get to the Baudelaire fortune, but his plans do not work. Now, Violet was right handed, and she signed the certificate with her left. Justice Strauss (neighbour of Count Olaf) had not clue, and she said "If the bride signs with her left hand, the wedding is not official". So once again, Count Olaf's plans were ruined. The orphans wanted to live with Justice Strauss, but Mr Poe (bank manager) said they had to liven with a relative. Count Olaf and his acting group got away in a car, and then Mr Poe takes the children to another relative, just who will that be? I know, it is Uncle Monty! Find out in The Reptile Room
In The Bad Beginning, 3 children named Violet (14 years old), Klaus (12 years old), and Sunny (infant) Baudelaire, are notified that their parents have been killed in a fire that destroyed their entire home. When they get sent to live with an old man named Count Olaf, he makes them do terrible chores. He later makes Violet and Klaus be in a play so that Count Olaf can marry Violet to get their enormous fortune. If they don't, Sunny will be dropped of of a tower. When they both say I do (to get married), Violet signs with her left hand, instead of her right hand ( she writes with her right hand). That makes the marriage invalid, and Count Olaf can't get their money. Count Olaf shuts off all the lights in the theater and escapes in his black car. The movie is a little different, because Count Olaf gets captured in that, and it has the 2nd and 3rd book in it (a.k.a. The Reptile Room and The Wide Window).
I have read the entire series. I personally loved it. My summary (a little bit of spoilers) is:
Violet, 14, Klaus, 12, and Sunny Baudelaire, infant (Baw-deh-lair) live happily with their parents in the Baudelaire mansion. Then one day when all 3 of them are playing along Briny Beach, Mr. Poe, a man who assists the Baudelaires and their affairs, comes and sadly says, "Your parents have perished in a terrible fire," and they couldn't believe it. It was a huge mansion fire that destroyed the house and the Baudelaire parents. Then in all the books, Mr. Poe takes them from guardian to guardian, or, adventure to adventure, as they discover secrets and uncover unsolved mysteries, with the evil treachery of Count Olaf.
The Baudelaire orphans have been told by a banker of the name Mr. Poe that their parents, Bertrand and Beatrice Baudelaire, have died in a fire supposedly lit by their evil uncle, Count Olaf. Mr. Poe does not know this and puts them in the care of Olaf. Olaf makes them do chores that are very harsh, such as making a meal for all of his theater troupe. They make putennesca sauce and chocolate pudding. Olaf is enraged and slaps Klaus across the face. Violet and Klaus report this behavior to Mr. Poe, but Poe says that he is acting in loco parentis, which means he is acting in a way that he seems best to punish them. He also hangs the youngest Baudelaire orphan, Sunny, from his tower and Violet and Klaus try to help her. The reason Olaf has done this is to make sure that Violet and Klaus cooperate in his play, The Marvelous Marriage. Klaus thinks this is a scheme to steal their fortune that Violet will inherit from her parents that have died when she comes of age. He figures out that Olaf is trying to marry Violet, for real, so he can inherit the fortune from her. He reads that when a judge is present and the bride signs the document and has been cleared by her legal guardian (Olaf), she has been legally married. Justice Strauss, Olaf's neighbor and the Baudelaire orphans' good friend, is invited by Olaf to be the judge. Strauss is a real judge, therefore making it legal. Klaus says to Olaf that he has figured out his plan, and tells Olaf. Olaf does not care, and Klaus does not know how to escape the scheme of the count. Klaus tries to tell Justice Strauss, but she wants to be on stage so much that she doesn't listen. Klaus bitterly watches Violet sign the legal document with her left hand. But, since Violet is right-handed, the marriage is not legal. The orphans reveal the plot to the audience, including Mr. Poe, and Poe quickly retrieves the children and tries to arrest Olaf. But one of his assistants turns the lights off, and in the confusion, Olaf gets away. The orphans and Poe get Sunny and calls the police. However, Olaf is already far away and the getaway car he used is all that is found.
Sorry if it is a bit long, but the first book is probably the least complicated and best book. I wanted to explain it thoroughly.
