the advantages are that solar cells use the power of light from the sun, wich is ultimately free. solar cells pay for themselves within a relatively short period of time. In some areas, you can even tap into the local power distribution facility and sell excess electricity your cells produce back into there power grid. Good quality cells may last a very long time. they take up a relatively small amount of space verse wind turbines and water turbines.
The disadvantages of solar cells is that they are initially expensive to produce. They are fairly fragile. The only time a solar cell produces electricity is when it is in direct exposure to significant amounts of solar light (during the day time). even though they are thin, they still must take up a significant surface area to receive enough exposure to provide adequate electrical current.
