The Amazon River runs through the Amazon. The Amazon rainforest [Floresta Amazonia] is known as the Amazon Jungle and as Amazonia. It's a forest that covers most of the Amazon River Basin of South America. Brazil has 60 percent of the rainforest within its borders.
The Amazon River originates in the Peruvian Andes within about 100 miles [160 kilometers] of the Pacific Ocean. It flows across northern Brazil to empty into the Atlantic Ocean.
