The famous Amityville house was built in 1924 it was sold in 1960 to the Riley family and they sold it to the Defeos in 1965. There was no mention of any supernatural goings on with the house until the tragic murders by the Defeo's son in 1975. Media and movies made the house out to be haunted by demons, and some other aspects was the fact the house was built on an Indian burial ground with a curse attached to anyone that disturbed the graves. It is true there is an Indian burial ground on the property, but no proof the curse caused the death's of the Defeo family by their son. The son was into drugs and had a bad reputation for getting into trouble. Some say he did it while others still feel he is innocent, but he is still serving time in prison for the murders of his family. The house sat for a year because of the terrible myths surrounding it, but in 1975 it was sold to the Lutz family. A month later the Lutz's fled the house never to go back, but there was heresay that their lawyer had them lie about evil things going on in the house to get out of their mortgage. Once again the house stood empty for over a year until the Cromarty family bought it in 1977 and they lived there quite peacefully for 10 years. In 1987 they sold the house to the O'Neill family and they lived there for over 10 years and sold it to their present owner who are all doing well and no signs of demons, voices, pigs eyes, flies or ghosts.

To expand on that, a troubled 22-year old (Ronnie DeFeo) killed his entire family one night, most likely starting with his father. Everyone was shot in bed and the motive can only be guessed at (although Ronnie was on probation at the time for stealing an outboard motor, and had recently been involved in a suspicious holdup, which some think he staged).

Ronnie confessed his guilt to the police and later confessed again during his trial, in open court. He made no mention or insinuation of being possessed or of anything supernatural happening that night. Instead he made some comments in an attempt to show the jury he was temporarily insane.

Ronnie has since given many varied and often conflicting accounts of what happened that night. Only once has he said the house was haunted. That was said during an interview with Hans Holzer, who at the time was researching a book on the case in partnership with DeFeo's attorney (and it is believed DeFeo was promised payment for telling Holzer whatever Holzer wanted to hear). Ronnie DeFeo has since denied everything he said about the house being haunted.

The Lutz family moved into the house 13 months after the murders (and 1 month after Ronnie's trial had ended). They lived there for a month and then left, claiming the house was haunted. According to the father of the family -- George Lutz -- the original book by Jay Anson remains the account closest to the truth, representing what they experienced; although it does contain some literary license and a bit of fiction.

The later 1979 film contained even more fiction, but still managed to semi-faithfully represent the experiences of the Lutz family.

George and Kathy Lutz, the parents of that family, have since died; but over the years they have stood by their claim that the haunting was real. Many have attempted to discredit the Lutzes' story, but so far nothing concrete has been proven or unproven.

The entire De Feo ( which means Of Faith) family with the exception of son Ronald Jr, were grimly assasinated. the possibility exists the victims may have been sedated before the attacks- as nobody in the neighborhood heard any screams, and or gunfire. This happend in November of l974. All of the victims were shot in the back portion of their bodies. As far as I know, the so-called Post-murders Amityville ( Horror) has not claimed any human lives but has sold many tomes of Horror-haunted house type books and at least two movies.
