The average lifespan of a surgeon is 68yrs. Research has failed to elucidate the explaination. However, theories that have stood up to speculation include the facts that most surgeons tend to be "type-A" personality (tend to have higher levels of stress, and studies show they have statistically significant higher rates of coronary artery disease), work longer hours that lead to inadequate sleep for decades (long-term effects are not completely understood, but it's clear that it decreases quality/quantity of life), many tend to not eat or excercise adequately (however, surgeons tend to be at one of two ends of the spectrum; either horribly unhealthy, or superbly healthy--unhealthy predominate), and lastly many surgeons ignore regular check-ups with their own doctors (some refer to this as the "God complex"). Any way you look at it, doctors have shorter lifespans than the average population, and the difference is statistially significant. If you could only spend one week with an intern or resident, you would quickly see how this profession will take years off your life, literally.
