It all depends on your driving style. Faulty, sticking calipers can cause disk brake pads to wear prematurely, otherwise it's all a function of your driving style and how much stopping you do. You can get a little more mileage out of semi-metalic brake pads, and ceramics are even better so when you replace the old ones make sure you get the appropriate upgrade. BTW, some auto manufacturers use semi-metalics as original equipment. My experience: I put 70k on my car in four years. I have done the fronts three times, the rears twice. Fronts do more braking. I drive 100mph and wait until the last minute to stomp the pedal to the floor. I am MEAN to brakes. I used the cheapest stuff the first time, and did the full set one year later. Premium parts the second time, and it was two years before I needed replacements on the front again.

It would be unusual to have the same brake pads front and back. That is not to say it does not happen but normally the brake pads on the driven wheels are bigger than the passive wheels.
