British prison cells are 5.5 sq.m. They have a bed, a toilet, desk and sink. Prisoners servicing a long sentence may even have televisions. Any other furnishings are screwed into place to avoid misuse.

The standard size of a two person prison cell is about 9' by 12', but it varies between prisons. Some are inhumaely smaller than that. In California they now stack their beds 3-high in them because of the overcrowding.

"Prison" is both a definition AND an image in our minds. "Jail" refers to those facilities used by local police for the temporary detention of arrestees, and by the county for the imprisonment of both those awaiting trial, and sentenced misdemeanants. "Prison" is a place of imprisonment operated by state or federal authorities for the detention of long term prisoners (more than one year). They vary greatly in their size and there is no standard as to either their physical size or the number of inmates they house. You might try Googling the phrase "prison" and see what you can find.
