The male lions seldom exceed from nine feet (274 cm) in total length, however there was some exceptional specimens who measured around ten feet (300 cm) in total length. The average weight calculated from the sub-Saharan males is about 180 kg, but they can weight from 130 to 225 kg, with an empty belly. The females average eight feet (244 cm) long and weight 120 kg. The heaviest males weighed by scientist were two lions of 260 kg (Etosha NP) and 225 kg (Kruger NP), respectively. Only that from Kruger NP was adjusted for stomach content.

According with the naturalist Reginald Pocock, the average standing height of a large male lion seldom exceed the 97 cm. Those records about males of 120 cm to the shoulders had been taken over the curves, according with Smuts et al. (1980).

In general, fully grown male lions weigh in at around 420 pounds, female lions generally weigh about 280 pounds.

At the shoulder area, the males typically reach around 4 feet high.

Not including the tail (somewhere between 26 inches and 40 inches long), male lions are usually a little more than 6 feet long, while females are usually slightly less than 6 feet.
The African lion is usually between 8 - 10 feet long excluding its tail.

The male lions (Panthera Leo) average 274 cm in total length and seldom exceed this (Bertram, 1978; Patterson, 2004), however there were a few specimens who measure almost 300 cm, between pegs (Stevenson-Hamilton, 1947). The average weight calculated for the sub-Saharan males range 145-192 kg but they can weight from 130 to 225 kg with an empty belly. The females average 244 cm in total length and weight 120 kg. The heaviest lions recorded by scientists are a male of 260 Kg captured in Etosha NP and a male of 225 kg from Kruger NP, this last, adjusted for stomach content (Apps, 2008). The Weight depends of geographic location, available prey, gender, age, and health. It has been noted that lions of South Africa are frequently larger than those of East Africa, subject to differing prey selection.

In Kruger Park, the weights of 344 lions were recorded. 41 adult males portrayed an average of 187.5 kg. During this study it was discovered that lions continued to increase in girth and acquired their full weight around age seven, after which point, they declined in mass. Thus the study reflects a mean based on growth fluctuation. Seven males in their prime averaged 196 kg. The largest lion in this study, at five years old, had a mass of 225 kg. Another male, age 10, weighed 206 kg. Stomach contents were not included in the weights. Females were, on average, 63 kg lighter than their opposite gender companions (Smuts et al., 1980).

In East Africa, males have the potential to attain masses seen in South African lions, but they average less, about 174.9 kg, the bulkiest being 204.7 kg (Smuts et al., 1980). This trend is also observed in the Asiatic lion, P. Leo persica, with recorded weight, in males, of 160-190 kg (Nowell & Jackson, 1996). The reason for this contrast in mass resides with the matter of available prey and habitat.

Some of the biggest lions ever recorded consist of a 272 kg male cattle-eater from Kenya (Nowell & Jackson, 1996), a 313 kg man-eater lion from Transvaal region (Wood, 1983) and a 265.4 kg beast, also from South Africa (Wood, 1983). African lions grow much larger in captivity. The fabled 'Rutledge' weighed 366 kg (807 lbs). 'Simba', the largest lion in captivity recorded in history, weighed 375 kg (Wood, 1983).
