If you are paying cash, a 20% tip for good service is customary. If you are paying by credit card, especially for small fares, 25% to 30% should be given, as cab drivers are forced to pay the credit card fees themselves, and it costs them a significant amount of their income (about 10% of their tips).

In fact, in the early days of credit card machines in cabs, virtually every driver would lie and tell you the credit card machine was broken. To pay with a credit card, you had to tell them, "Look, I know the machine isn't really broken. I promise to give you a really big tip if you let me pay by credit card."

Credit card processing fees are why lots of businesses have a credit card minimum of $10 to $20. The fees cost them so much that taking credit cards for small purchases just isn't worth it.

Cab drivers, unfortunately, are not allowed to have credit card minimums.

15% or $2, whichever is greater.

In the UK, tipping the taxi driver or cabbie is a matter of choice - look at the service you get !!!

Did he open your doors?, did he chat to you?, did he answer your questions?, did he help you with your bags? - if NO why tip him at all?

Tips are for a service over and above the norm - if all he did was get you from A to B that's his job, why tip him for doing no more than the minimum?

This is from the director of a Taxi company and a driver !!!

Answer #2 - Wanted to agree with Mark- we usually suggest 15% as well, but it does definitely depend on the service you receive! Some are more deserving than others ;)

It depends on the service he has given to you. Customary tips range from 15% (outstanding) to 10% (standard service) to 0 (awful).

Answer #2

Agreed- if the service is horrible, do not feel obligated to tip- however, most people do tip 15%/$2 ...

Not very much depending on the time of the day, everyone is ALWAYS in a hurry. But it can get up to 10 dollars per person, if they are not in a hurry.
