Matt Dillon (actor James Arness) was the Marshall of Dodge City, Kansas. This was a wild old west town with lots of crime. Matt was strong, honest, a great shot, and totally devoted to duty. Kitty Russell (actress Amanda Blake), known as Miss Kitty, owner of the Long Branch Saloon, was a good friend, and a possible romantic interest, though their relationship was never well defined. Matt's devotion to duty prevented them from ever getting married. Doc Adams (actor Milburn Stone) was a good friend, older than Matt, who gave sage wisdom as well as medical treatment. In early episodes, the deputy was Chester Goode (actor Dennis Weaver), who walked with a limp and spoke with a light southern drawl. In later episodes, the deputy was Festus Haggen (actor Ken Curtis), almost never clean shaven, who spoke with a strong country accent. He was often paired with Doc Adams in good natured, cantankerous mutual insulting matches. Other regular characters included Newly O'Brien, another deputy in later years, Sam the bartender, who worked for Miss Kitty, and Louie, the habitual drunkard. For a few years actor Burt Reynolds played blacksmith, and occasional deputy, Quint Asper.

Gunsmoke was a Western, with a Law enforcement bent. Gunsmoke had Marshal Matt Dillon, a number of second-lead characters, Festus and Chester, for example, Kitty, Dillon's girl friend and a Barmaid of all things. Most of the other characters were, well ride-in and shoot-em-up. As Dodge City was something of a transit town- in the Beef trade- well there were a lot of people from out of state- some Varmints. Perhaps because of technical bacwardness ( no police radios, for example) they got into some thoughtful and talky plot lines. Gunsmoke was originally a radio show. In fact there was a joke that the Hilton Sisters ( popular around '39 ) were joined at the hip- or as my Uncle Bob quipped- In the Gunsmoke Posture ( about to fight a duel- back to back- which was fairly accurate). As Gunsmoke was on both radio and Tv and for a long stretch- it is difficult to analyze the show as a whole.
