Jehovah's Witnesses have always accepted the bible's account of creation as true. They thus believe the world (planet) came into existence as a direct result of God's will and purpose and all life was desgned and created by him.

Jehovah's Witnesses do not consider themselves "creationists" however, since they do not believe in a 'young earth' theory or that the world was created in 7 literal 24/hour days.

That is a lot of information, so I will just post a link called "Basic Bible Based Beliefs," which gives a good general overview of our beliefs. I will also post one to a brochure (from which the one above is taken) called Jehovah'sWitnesses-Who Are They? What Do They Believe?

SEE: Related Links below

According to Wikipedia:

  • Jehovah's Witnesses believe in a single god, the same one that Jews, other Christians and Muslims believe in (God or Allah). They believe that God's name is Jehovah. Jehovah is the English translation of the Hebrew word "YHWH", which is known as the Tetragramaton.
  • They believe Jehovah is the most powerful being in existence and that he created the heavens and the Earth as written in Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" and in Psalms 83:18 "that people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth".
  • They believe that Jehovah is God the Father, Jesus is God's son, and the Holy Spirit is God's power that he uses. They do not believe in the Trinity.
  • Jehovah's Witnesses believe that only a small number of people (144,000, called the "little flock" taken from Revelation chapters 7 and 14) will go to heaven to be kings and priests with Jesus Christ. They believe that after Armageddon (the final battle of Jehovah against his enemies), God will give the Earth to the rest of the people who did what God wanted (the "great crowd"). They believe that God will make the Earth a paradise for them, and also bring back to life those who died in the past into that paradise.

Along with Creationists within the Christian Church, Jehovah's Witnesses accept the literal translation of Genesis as the unerring Word of God and therefore something that has to be taken absolutely literally, without question, and without examination - eg the belief in a six day [Jehovah's Witnesses regard each day = 7000 years, see below*, whereas Creationists regard the six days as six literal periods of 24 hours] Creation, and the rejection of the Theory of evolution as they regard it as false.

However, most other Christians, like the ancient Jews themselves did, and as both Jesus and Paul did, regard Genesis as allegorical and uphold that reading Genesis as a literal 'history' means that much of the symbolism and subtleties of the scripture are lost. Therefore many Christians accept evolution over millions of years as the work of God and regard Genesis, as did its writers, as an allegorical Hebrew poem - not literally true but containing much profound truth in its story and its symbolism.

*Jehovah's Witnesses believe that each of the 6 days of creation is 7000 solar years long. The Watchtower 1st Jan 1987 page 30 says ''Second, a study of the fulfillment of Bible prophecy and of our location in the stream of time strongly indicate that each of the creative days (Genesis, chapter 1) is 7,000 years long. It is understood that Christ's reign of a thousand years will bring to a close God's 7,000-year 'rest day,' the last 'day' of the creative week. (Revelation 20:6; Genesis 2:2, 3) Based on this reasoning, the entire creative week would be 49,000 years long.''

Jehovah's Witnesses believe in the Bible that there is a God - named Jehovah, his name can be found in Psalms 83:18 (That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.) - but he is the only true God. Jehovah's Witnesses also believe in Jesus who is the son of Jehovah - proof that Jehovah and Jesus are not one can be found in Philippians 2:11 (and every tongue should openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.). The official website of Jehovah's Witnesses further explains the beliefs: see below.

They believe in the Bible's account at Genesis about creation. The Bible simply says in the beginning God creative the heavens and the Earth, and doesn't say how much time passed between that beginning and the first creative day. So they concede to the scientific evidence that the Earth is probably billions of years old. In the most recent publications, they also teach that the creative days were an unspecified period of time, and probably many thousands of years each, but simply referred to as a days work from God's point of view.
