Wild turkey seems to be a consensus pick. The 8 year version.

Additionally good beginner bourbon's are Jim Beam's 4-year version, it's in the white bottle. Four Roses and Evan Williams are also reasonably priced.

I'm a Southerner by birth and proud of it, even though I moved to Seattle 20 years ago and probably will never go back. One of the things I never missed was bourbon, which is the universal Southern whiskey of choice. Bourbon always struck me as waaaay too sweet and narrow in its flavor range. But, as my wife is a Bourbon fan, I went to our neighborhood liquor store to pick up an inexpensive bottle for her, to help ease her discomfort from the flu. I noticed a bottle that all my buddies back in North Carolina used as their special occasion booze; a Bourbon I had never even tasted. It was $18, so I bought it.

It is George Dickel No. 12 and, after a lifetime of hating Bourbon, I now have one that I, a confirmed single-malt Islay Scotch guy, can drink and enjoy. It has a lovely, woodsy, caramel/vanilla aroma and flavor, is very smooth and well-balanced, and has a delightful, subtle finish.

Since I'm not a big Bourbon fan, I may not be the best person to answer this but, as a beer and wine reviewer for the Seattle P-I, my business is evaluating beverages and this passes all my tests for flavor, balance, body, and finish. Just plain good stuff.

It depends. Bourbon is a subset of whiskey. Other whiskeys include Tennessee, Scotch, Canadian, and Rye.
