Ubuntu Linux is most popular Desktop Operating system today. Your machine has been tried on Ubuntu 6.10 and 7.04.
The latest Ubuntu version 7.10 was released recently on Oct 18 and my advice is not to use it if you are first time user of Ubuntu.
