For a continuous allergen like a house pet it is advisable to keep the pet away and visit only once in a while

Sometimes just topical cortisone or other anti-inflammatory medicine is used, other times they need systemic treatment with steroids or anti-histamines. If you're allergic to dog dander you need to get an antihistamine like Benadryl or Chlortrimeton. However it's much better to wash after contact with dogs and avoid spending too much time in confined spaces.
