PLain water, mop or rag wrung nearly dry. Murphy's is bad for hardwood. Some people use "Old English" in matching color to take care of scratches, but should be plain water or very, very mild detergent.

If the wood is not sealed: then do not use water alone as it will damage the wood.

To get rid of grease and dirt and help to preserve your floor, The Reader's Digest suggests:

4½ cups liquid paraffin

1½ cups of glycerine

¼ cup household ammonia

¾ cup turpentine

Combine the ingredients in a wide mouthed jar.

Store away from heat, away from children.

To use:

Add 1 cup of cleaner to 2 litres of warm water in a bucket and with it sponge-mop the floor. Can rinse afterwards if you want.

Is it necessary to use hardwood floor cleaner on hardwood floors?

It's not always necessary to use hardwood floor cleaner on hardwood floors. While dedicated hardwood floor cleaners are designed to be gentle and effective, you can also maintain your floors using a damp mop with water and a mild pH-balanced soap. Avoid using excessive water or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the wood. Regular sweeping or vacuuming to remove dirt and debris is also crucial in preserving the beauty and longevity of hardwood floors. However, for specific stains or deep cleaning, a hardwood floor cleaner can be a helpful option, but it's not always mandatory for routine maintenance.

Whats the best steam cleaner for hardwood floors?

None. You should not use a steam-cleaner on hardwood floors. Water, and especially steam, can damage wood by swelling it at the seams, and then causing it to crack and split later. Use only cleaners approved for hardwood floors, or a window cleaner containing alcohol, or a vinegar/water solution. Mist it onto the floor or onto the head of a damp (not wet!) sponge mop or swiffer-type mop, then wipe clean.
