What is the best flea and tick repellent for dogs? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Okay, this is an interesting question because I have hit on a flea and tick repellent that is much less expensive than anything else on the market. I have not put any commercial flea or tick repelling on my dogs for 3 years and I see the occasional tick that is dead or dying but nothing live and I live in Oklahoma where it is a flea and tick haven.
The solution is whole cooked white rice. Not the instant or 3 minute and not the rice all ready in some dogfoods.
Receipe is as follows.
3 Cups whole longgrain white rice
3 Cups water
1 heaping Tbls garlic powder (any brand) or 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic
1 T cooking oil
1 T salt.
Rice cooker works easier and you may want to get one after you see how well this works but in a 2 quart sauce pan; pour the Tablespoon of cooking oil in the bottom of the pan coating well. You can use wheat germ oil for a dog that needs the extra fat. This keeps the rice from sticking during cooking. Add the rice water, garlic and salt. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes checking often until all the water is gone. Refrigerate in a baggie between feedings.
Let this cool some before putting it in dog's food. For large breeds (over 75 pounds) uses 3/4 cup mixed in dry dog food. Medium breeds 1/2 cup and small breed 1/4 cup for Toy breeds a Tablespoon.
This will take about two weeks of daily feeding to show any results. It has to get in the body system. So in the meantime while you are waiting for restults you should get some Frontline Plus and treat the dog by dropping a drop in 4 or 5 sites down the top line of the dog, starting at the head and ending at the tail root. This will take care of the problem for 30 days while the rice is getting in the system. For the rice to work it must be fed every day, so plan on cooking rice fairly frequently. This is a bonus for the dog also for there are a great many components in rice that are good for dogs and I've found they like it well enough to pick it out and eat it first and then eating the dogfood.
