The question you have to answer first is "Best for what?" With guns, as with any tools, you have to pick the right one for the job. A great hunting handgun or a wonderful bullseye pistol make a lousy defensive arm.
In general terms, the best handgun is one that you can shoot well. This varies with your physical size and shape and the training you have. The absolute best handgun is the one you have within reach when you need one.
As for "the best" in performance, reliability, accuracy, weight, price, function and design there are a few solid handguns that are up there. The top 2 though Id have to say are:
Glock 19 9mm
Sig P226 9mm
Very likely, it's the Glock. Glock in general is the best selling pistol in the commercial and law enforcement market.

Best is a relative term that has to many variables.
Best left to a gunsmith
Whichever one best suits your needs.
Best left to a qualifed gunsmith
The Kel Tec in .40 is probably your best best.
There are many hand guns available on the market. But your personal preference of the hand gun in which is best for protection is up to the person. While one person maybe like a Glock you may like a caliber or style of gun for yourself.
Best is very subjective. Sig Sauer and H&K are among the best in general.
